What was the best part of school when you were growing up? For many students, it was the field trips—those days when you’d get out of the classroom and experience art, science, technology, history and more up close and personal. Not only is it a break from traditional schooling, but visiting museums can offer students a chance to connect with subject matter in a much more immediate way.
The COVID-19 pandemic has made it harder than ever for students to have cultural learning experiences, particularly the ones they’d get at museums. Luckily, the Smithsonian is partnering with Verizon to create augmented reality museums, accessible from Woodward, OK. Today’s technology has made it possible to interact with art, history and science in ways that older generations could only dream of. Although it’s no substitute for actually visiting museums in person, it’s a great way to enjoy a break from the normal schooling routine, and expose your kids to new cultural offerings.
What’s available now
The Smithsonian Open Access Initiative is designed to give students, teachers and parents access to high-quality, immersive exhibits that could enhance their learning experience, even when stuck at home. Currently, they’re offering an exhibit on baseball player Roberto Clemente, and a fashion/culture exhibit called “Girlhood (It’s Complicated).” All you need to do is scan the QR code with your mobile device to explore the exhibits.
The New York-based Metropolitan Museum of Art is also partnering with Verizon. “Visitors” can use their phones to explore the museum’s masterpieces and virtually tour physical spaces. You’ll be able to visit the Egyptian Temple of Dendur, see the Unicorn Tapestries from the Met Cloisters and explore other favorites from Jackson Pollock, Emanuel Leutze and more. The exhibit uses 3D renderings, photos and games to pique interest. In fact, you can even see “underdrawings” and other hidden details, which wouldn’t be available otherwise.
Both the Smithsonian and Met offerings are free, although the Met exhibit is currently slated for a five-week run. If you and your children or students are interested in touring these exhibits, take advantage of the opportunity as soon as possible.
How to use the museum features
To get “into” the museum exhibits, you’ll need a mobile device with a camera and either 4G or 5G connectivity. Download a QR scanner app and point the camera at one of the Verizon museum QR codes. Click “open link” to see the exhibit, then click “see it in your space” to open the augmented reality features. You’ll probably have to allow microphone and camera usage. Then click and move around to hear audio, see more information and explore the exhibit.
