Types of Computer Backup Methods

Backing up your important digital files is a good habit to get into. If anything ever happens to your computer, you’ll be able to rest easy knowing that you still have other copies available to restore.

There are many different methods you can use to back up your files. Here’s some information from a computer store in Woodward, OK about some of the most common options you might consider.

Cloud storage

If you regularly use more than one computer, having cloud storage not only gives you a file backup option, but can also make working from more than one device significantly easier, as you won’t have to routinely carry around a flash drive. When you save a file on the cloud, you can access it anywhere you have an internet connection, with any type of device (computer, tablet, smartphone).

Some of these cloud storage options go beyond just being file storage systems and can actually be collaborative workspaces. The free Google Drive, for example, gives you a fair amount of storage to start with and gives you the ability to either work on your own documents from multiple computers or share those documents with others to work on them collaboratively. Any changes made to the file then automatically show up anywhere else that file is accessed.

Online backup

Online backup has become another popular means of backing up important files without having to purchase a physical drive. These services don’t include the same file sync options you’ll find in collaborative services like Google Drive, but instead make it easy for you to create quick backups, directly transferring files from your hard drive to an online storage space with easy restoration abilities.

Simply install the software on your computer, tell it which files and folders you wish to keep backed up and it will run in the background of your computer to manage those backups.

Local backup

Physical backup drives offer you a little extra security in that you can be completely certain you—and only you—have access to those documents. While you can still use some CDs and flash drives to back up smaller amounts of data, you’ll get the most storage space out of an external hard drive.

External hard drives are extremely easy to use. Simply plug it in via USB, then get to work. Just copy and paste the files you want to back up and your operating system will take care of the rest. You can get a whole lot of storage space for a relatively affordable price.
